Once you accept and join their shared folder, the folder should automatically begin syncing with your dropbox app, and downloads the stuff onto your computer. Just get your client to add your email to their shared folder (they'll probably have to do that through, but it's a one-time thing) by clicking the little link-chain icon. You'll still have to be connected to the internet, though, for things to update. If you're just trying to share a folder (through your computer, without having to use the browser), that's pretty easy to do. I'm assuming when you say 'desktop app' you mean the one that shows up in the upper right at the very top/still syncs, right? If you disconnect your dropbox completely then it won't sync any more files past the point where you disconnected it.
